Matchday 46: Leeds United @ Plymouth Argyle

Leeds United (1st) at Plymouth Argyle (23rd) in the English Football League Championship

Date: Saturday, 3 May.

Time: 6:30am Central.

TV: Paramount+

What’s At Stake:

  • Leeds has already clinched promotion to the Premier League, as has Burnley. However, they’re tied with 97 points. However however, Leeds is 13 goals to the good on their goal differential, so as long as the Leeds/Plymouth result matches the Burnley/Millwall result, Leeds will win the League. And the last time Burnley lost - 32 games ago on November 3, 2024 - was 1-0 to…Millwall.

  • There’s also the reality for Leeds that, with a win, they’ll reach 100 points in a season for the first time in club history. If Burnley wins, as well, that’s two teams in the same league with 100 points in a season, which is pretty much unheard of.

  • If, and this is a Big If, Leeds win and score seven goals, that’ll be 100 points and 100 goals scored. Leeds beat Cardiff 7-0 on February 1, so it’s not the craziest idea…

  • For Plymouth Argyle, there’s a crazy situation at the bottom of the table where five teams - Derby County, Preston North End, Luton Town (who were in the Premier League 12 months ago), Hull City, and Plymouth - are within three points of each other. Two of those teams are going to get relegated to League One.

Previous Results

  • Leeds and Plymouth have played each other five times in the thousands of years in which 11 English cats have lined up against 11 other English cats, and Leeds has never lost (four wins, one draw).

  • They last played on November 2 at Elland Road, and Leeds won 3-0, scoring all three goals in an eight-minute span in the first half. Leeds’ 77% possession against Plymouth in that game was the 2nd-highest for Leeds this season.

  • In the nine games since losing 1-0 to Portsmouth on March 9, Leeds United are undefeated (6 wins, 3 draws).

  • Three of Leeds’ four losses this season have been on the road, but they’re 5-4-1 in their last ten away games.

  • 34 of Plymouth’s 46 points this season have come at their appropriately-named Home Park. They’ve won three straight home games, outscoring opponents 7-3 in those three games.

  • Plymouth are 4-2 in the last 30 days.
